Copy a User Defined Variant

Copy a User Defined Variant

Overview

You can now create a new vehicle variant by copying an existing User Defined variant, instead of keying every field again. This makes it quick to set up each new model year as its own variant, so the previous model year is kept rather than overwritten.

When the 'Copy' Button Appears

The Copy button shows beside View Edit History on the variant's Detail tab when all of the following are true:

  • The variant_copy_enabled_flag control (module qt) is set to yes.

  • The variant on display has a Data Source of User Defined.

  • The variant is in Display mode, not being edited.

  • You have access to Edit on the Variant Detail tab.

Copy is not available for RedBook, Glass's, JATO variants.

Setup

Copy is switched off by default. To switch it on:

  1. Navigate to Setup / Reference Data and select gb_controls.

  2. Find the variant_copy_enabled_flag control in the qt module.

  3. Set it to yes and save.

If you can't see gb_controls, contact Catch-e Support.

How It Works

  1. Navigate to Setup / Reference Data and select qt variants.

  2. Open a User Defined variant on the Detail tab.

  3. Select Copy.

  4. A new, unsaved variant opens in Edit mode with the original's details filled in.

  5. Change the Variant Code, and anything else that differs, such as Model Year, Description and the list prices.

  6. Select Save.

  7. The new variant is saved with its own Variant ID and shown in Display mode.

Expected Behaviour

What Is Copied

Field

On the new variant

Variant ID

Blank until saved, then a new ID

List Price Gross, Net and GST

Not copied; each shows 0.00

Variant Code

Copied; must be changed before saving

Variant Code Previous and Variant Code Next

Blank

Current Vehicle, Vehicle Class and Vehicle Segment

Copied and kept when saved

Status

Copied as is, so an Active variant gives an Active copy

Data Source

Copied as User Defined; can be changed

All other fields on the tab

Copied; can be changed

Records linked to the original, such as its profile, standard and optional equipment, dealer discounts, discounts, rebates, bonuses and photos, are not copied.

While Editing the Copy

  • Copy, Edit, New and View Edit History are hidden.

  • Save and Cancel are shown.

Saving With the Same Variant Code

  • If the Data Source is unchanged, the existing duplicate message is shown and nothing is saved.

  • If the Data Source has been changed, the message "Variant Code must differ from the variant it was copied from." is shown and nothing is saved.

  • Variant Codes are compared ignoring case and leading or trailing spaces.

Other Save Checks

  • All existing checks apply, with the same messages.

  • If a check fails, your entries are kept and nothing is saved.

  • A list price left at 0.00 is saved as zero.

After Saving

  • The new variant has its own Variant ID.

  • Its creation shows in its View Edit History.

  • The original variant is unchanged.

  • The new variant can itself be copied.

  • Any overnight processes your organisation runs for new variants (such as adding a profile, discounts or optional equipment) apply to the copy as for any new variant.

Cancelling

  • You are asked "OK to lose current changes?".

  • Once confirmed, nothing is saved and the original variant is shown again.

Copy Switched Off

  • The Copy button does not show and the Variant Detail tab works exactly as before.
